Kitchen Design Case Study

Junction Creek Residence

Durango, Co

Timeline: 11 Months

Square footage of design: 625

Summary of Project:

This was a transformative renovation that took a dated design with minimal function to a contemporary version of transitional style. From the first meeting with these clients to the last finish completed was a full eleven months with three months of full blown renovations and construction work. This kitchen is a smaller space and we maximized every inch we could even moving a wall six inches to add another set of cabinets for additional storage and counter space.

For this project the design styles to incorporate were:

  • TRANSITIONAL - A contemporary style that mixes traditional and modern designs. We also refer to it as “traditional light”.

  • MID-CENTURY MODERN - MCM is now considered an “evergreen” style as it has been a regular style in use over the last fifteen years.

  • SCANDINAVIAN - Clean, simple, and minimal lines, shapes and colors.

  • BOHO CHIC - The eclectic mix of colors, patterns, and textures.

The feeling list was: Tranquil, Cozy, Calm, Orderly, Inviting, Textural, Organic, and Warm.

The Design Team

Our team acted as the general contractor and worked closely with each trade that came through. This included providing detailed work orders for each vendor, daily site visits to review the work, and problem solving the many surprises that arose along the way. Some of the unexpected items that we encountered were a wall and door that needed to be re-framed, a leaking water supply, stairs that didn’t have a subfloor, and electrical that desperately needed updating.

We loved being in charge of both of the design and construction. This helped our vision come to life successfully and seamlessly. Despite the numerous unanticipated construction challenges we were able to stay on our proposed schedule in large part due to our good relationship and regular communication with our trades.

These clients were amazing to work with! Like all of our other clients here in Durango, they were former city dwellers (Washington D.C.) who escaped to our area. We are so pleased to call them clients and now friends!
